The nice thing about the guitar is that the tuning is NOT completely symmetrical.

The G and B-string have a major 3rd as a distance. The rest of the strings are tuned with a 4th as an interval between them. This gives rise to a lot of possibilities on the neck, for example this lick. You can play it in a different position to sound more dorian (scale A dorian) when you play it on the B and G string.
